I dare to say that everyone in the world, at some point of their lives, have heard a legend. We all have heard stories about fantastic creatures, ghosts, curses and many other things. We always hear about them, but they always happen to “someone, someone knows” never to a close person to you, have you notice that? I choose to begin this lesson for you by telling you what a legend and a myth are.
Legends are stories that have been passed on from person to person (or thanks to today´s technology, from computer to computer). These stories are usually semi-true. People start adding more and more to it as time goes by. They usually have an element of truth, but at the end the story ends up with imaginary or fantastic creatures, maybe even a hero or two. We have many legends around the world like:
- The legend of Robin Hood.
- The legend of the fountain of youth.
- The legend of Atlantis.
- The legend of bloody Mary
- The legend of El Dorado
- The legend of King Arthur.
There is also something called a myth. A myth is a story that usually tells a part of a civilization’s culture. They are similar to legends but with a deeper meaning. Myths tend to involve supernatural beings or creatures. Myths are usually exaggerated to explain something that they don’t fully understand. For example we have a lot of myths surrounding the Greek culture. They created those myths to explain things they didn’t know how else to explain like, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes etc. Some of the most popular myths and things that are still believed to be true are:
- The alligators in the sewers of New York.
- Napoleon was short.
- All the stories surrounding Greek mythology.
- All the stories surrounding Roman Mythology.
- All the stories surrounding Nordic mythology.
So as we can see, there are a lot of mysterious stories in our world, stories that we may never know if they are truth or not, however they keep passing on to new generations to bring mystery, fantasy and in some cases a little horror.
